William Burroughs was one of the most important figures of twentieth century literature. Born in St Louis in 1914 he became attached to the Beat Generation of the 1950's in America but went on to produce his own very distinctive style of routines and cutups. His most famous book is probably the satire Naked Lunch, a funny but disturbing look at what is on the end of the fork. He wrote many novels and continued to be prolific until his death in 1997. He was a man who sought the truth, with a compassion and insight achieved by few others, as to the state of the modern age. His words are designed to infiltrate the mind, fight the virus of words with words, searching out and consuming attitudes of control impregnated by the biologic and social programming of our lives. Without him Interzone would not exist.
